The network offers an initiation and discovery into the special knowledge possessed by the different cultural  groups who living in New Caledonia.

The aim of the " Âmical " network is to guarantee the quality of the cultural contributions and services presented to tourists in New Caledonia and to ensure that they are presented ethically so that traditions are not compromised.

The Customary Gesture
Each Kanak clan is linked to a particular piece of land which is full of tradition, legends and tales.

When entering a tribal village, you must first visit the "chefferie", the Chief's area, to advise him of your intentions.  You should also request permission to walk on his land.

The customary gesture is a mark of attention.  It takes place in the simplest of ways.  In a tribe, to establish your special relationship with your hosts, you should offer a present.

More than the object itself, it's the gesture and the words which count.  Those pronounced by the Kanaks will explain that as from this moment on, you are their guest and they will protect you.  Listen carefully to their words and do not interrupt while they are speaking.

The responsible traveller should be aware of the local traditions which in turn leads to more enjoyable and meaningful connection and interaction.

Responsible tourism
« Tourism which is fair and responsible, optimising the benefits for the local population while reducing the negative impact on the environment and local culture and helping the local people to preserve fragile cultures, habitats and the diversity of flora and fauna ».

A sustainable tourism which « answers the needs of the present without compromising the capacity of future generations to respond to their own needs»

For everyone who loves discovering new horizons, a common aim must be to be responsible when travelling, in order to protect and improve the future opportunities for the region visited.

The 10 rules of a responsible tourist

1)    Do not leave litter - take it with you

2)    Respect the environment. Do not destroy it nor take plants, flowers or other living species.

3)    Respect the cultural and social customs of the communities (pace of life, traditions, uses and daily life).
4)    Purchase local fresh and seasonal products in order to generate benefits for local businesses.

5)    Look at labels on food products, checking for organic products and fair trading.

6)   Avoid plastic bags and unnecessary packaging.

7)    Select souvenirs carefully:  taking objects which are animal or mineral based can threaten their survival and upset the ecological balance..

8)    Be aware before departure of the political and cultural situations which may exist in the destination.

9)    Choose public transport or car-sharing.

10)    Always request permission before taking any initiative and stay within authorised areas.
